With Comic-Con 2012 officially over and the constant flow of gaming news at its closure, I was finally able to catch up on some much needed R and R by means of some one-on-one time with my DVR. After watching a few Food Network reality shows (I’m hoping that enough food-related TV will turn me into a master chef), I advanced to HBO’s raunchiest, supernatural thriller, True Blood.

For those who have never seen the show, let me summarize it for you in a series of words: vampires, sex, werewolves, homosexual sex, fairies, Louisiana, blond girl with powers. So far, season five has introduced multiple new dilemmas for the telepathic Sookie Stackhouse, including the return of the 3000 year old vampire Russell Edgington, hate crimes against non-humans, an internal dispute among the werewolf pack, and the introduction of a fairy operated nightclub. True Blood certainly sets the bar for bizarre programming.

While watching one of the most recent episodes, a new antagonist was introduced to the series, the fire spirit Ifrit. The embodiment of fury, Ifrit was summoned by a dying Iraqi woman to exact revenge after four American soldiers massacred their village. The towering figure of smoke and flames though menacing, is not quite the rendition I was expecting.

If video games such as Final Fantasy have taught me anything, it’s that Ifrit is so much more than smoke and flames. The hell beast is a massive conglomerate of claws and horns whose Hellfire attack propels a sphere of fiery destruction at its opponent. The guys in True Blood have it easy if you ask me.

Are you a fan of the True Blood series? What is your impression of adding Ifrit to the long list of supernatural creatures in the show?
