This past summer, two video game industry veterans challenged Nintendo to breathe new life into an N64 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Pablo Belmonte and Paco Martinez released a teaser trailer on YouTube in July 2012 that showcased a  familiar Majora’s Mask sequence only with souped-up HD graphics and sound; easily transporting the original into the modern era.

At inception, rumors spread like wildfire. Bloggers and media outlets claimed that Nintendo accidentally leaked the video, with buzz that Majora’s Mask for the Wii U was already in the works. After a little bit of digging and a hearty serving of fact-checking, it was confirmed that the YouTube video was in fact an unofficial project made by Belmonte and Martinez for Nintendo to propose a Majora’s Mask Wii U remake. “We are creating this small test for the ‘big N’ as a proposal to make this project come true. We work in the game industry and we fell in love with this idea a long time ago. The music is totally provisional. We worked for a long time in concepts and designs, but for the real production we spent only one (hard) week, that’s the reason of some “bugs” in animations and post-production that we want to fix soon. We hope that you enjoy and help us with your support.”

The reality is, this is a fan project so there is no telling if Nintendo will respond favorably. As a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda, I would love to see one of the most unique installments to the series in fully-fledged HD brilliance. Recently, a fan-made petition circled the web in support of Majora’s Mask Wii U. It has since expired and a new petition has been made.
